About This Project

The Marin, Washington, U.S.A.

18 Luxury Vacation Suites
Perched on a sandy spit, surrounded by water, the Marin sits along the rugged Pacific coastline amid a backdrop of magnificent coastal views, including Mount Baker ski resort. Marin, meaning "of the sea", was conceived to embody the surrounding Pacific Rim landscape; both the beauty of the sea; and rusticity of the coastal landscape. The ultimate in sustainable design and bio-mimicry, a natural ventilation system encourages cross ventilation- harnessing the ocean breeze directly into suites. Natural light cascades through the interior via an exterior corridor system. Powerful offshore winds and corrosive salt water- posed a design challenge. Olive-stained cedar cladding wraps the building in a blanket of soft natural green. Western red cedar -with its durability, sustainability, and texture will become more beautiful, as it weathers. Galvanized “butterfly” chimney caps pay tribute to migratory birds. Custom "drunken picket" guardrails depict scattered driftwood on the shoreline. Inside, luxury suites, were designed with lofts, high ceilings and fireplaces. Heavy douglas fir beams and exposed fasteners, provide "rustic-industrial" appeal. The Marin stands proud at the shores of the Pacific oceanfront: With a bold design and extensive use of natural wood, it is poised to endure the test of time and climate.
